Community News: PHP Master Series, Volume 1 (One-Day Virtual Conference)

Cal Evans has officially announced his latest in his series of full-day virtual conferences aimed at PHP developers - the PHP Master Series, Volume 1 (from the Day Camp 4 Developers):

There is a lot of good information shared at conferences and sadly not event 1% of developers who identify themselves as PHP developers, ever get to attend one. This makes me sad. So I'm trying something new. [...] I went through the PHP conferences from the second-half of this year and picked out 6 that really stood out. This was a very difficult task; the PHP community and conferences are blessed with a bounty of great talks and speakers. The criteria I used was topics, joind.in score, and speaker. I tried to find talks that were on topics that are of interest to developers, that others liked, and that were given by speakers I know, and know do a good job.

This one-day virtual event is happening December 21st (a Friday) and is made up of six different talks from six different speakers:

Designing Beautiful Software - Matthew Weier O'Phinney

Cryptography For The Average Developer - Anthony Ferrara

Javascript Best Practices & BackboneJS for the PHP Developer - Ryan Weaver

Your code sucks, let's fix it. - Rafael Dohms

Building a Firehose - Ian Barber

From POX to HATEOAS, A Real Company's Journey Building a RESTful API - Luke Stokes

You can pick up your ticket to attend for just $50 USD as a regular attendee (or voice only for those that just want to listen in). There's also an option for an "Office Party" for $100 USD if you have more than a few folks that would like to attend.

Zend Developer Zone: Announcing the December 2010 Zend Framework Bug-Hunt

On the Zend Developer Zone today there's a new announcement from Ralph Schindler about this month's Zend Framework Bug Hunt happening this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (the 16th through the 18th).

Has Zend Framework been good to you this year? Are you trying to figure out what to give to Zend Framework for Christmas? Well, search no more- Zend Framework wants one thing: for you to close some bugs at this month's bug-hunt! This Thursday, Friday and Saturday of December (the 16th, 17th and 18th 2010), we'll be hosting our monthly bug hunt. For those of you unfamiliar with the event, each month, we organize the community to help reduce the number of open issues reported against the framework.

Last month they had 111 issues closed and are hoping for at least that this month. Volunteers have come together to find and squash bugs that have popped up during the life of the Zend Framework. If you're interested in helping this month, take a look at Ralph's post for what you'll need to do before and during the event.

Chris Jones has announced the release of the latest version of the Undergroupnd PHP & Oracle Manual.

A hot-off-the-press, free, 290 page, updated version of the Underground PHP & Oracle Manual is available for download from http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/php/pdf/underground-php-oracle-manual.pdf. [...] The previous edition was released way back in May 2007. Since then, Oracle Database 11g and the OCI8 1.3 extension have been released, there have been various changes in PHP community, and I've simply just gathered more notes, examples and have more information to share.

The manual has doubled in size and includes tons of new content reflecting the updates since the previous release. Chris thanks those who helped in creating the content, helped get it out to the community and his co-author Alison Holloway.

Its the holiday season and even the PHP community is getting into the spirit. Much like last year, >Chris Shiflett (joined this time by >Sean Coates) have created this year's PHP Advent calendar.

From Chris Shiflett's blog:

Is it December again already? I like good traditions, so with the help of Sean and many others, PHP Advent is back again, this time with its own domain. I would call it a web site, but that might be stretching the truth at the moment. Jon is going to help us out with a simple design in the very near future. The focus, of course, is the quality content from our gracious authors.

The December 1st post for this year is one by yours truely - You Need the PHP Community. For more great content as the month goes on, you can keep up either through their feed, on Twitter or just by heading over to the site each day.

For the Eclipse PHP developers out there anxiously awaiting the next major release of the extension, you'll have to wait just a bit longer. Max Horvath mentions a few of the reasons why:

As expected by many, Eclipse PDT's next major release has been postponed. While two milestones couldn't be released, it became clearer and clearer that the release date of September 15th 2008 couldn't be met.

The new deadline has been set though - December 29th, 2008. New improvements in this release will include a type hierarchy view, new PHP explorer functionality, code templates and a code assist for dynamic variables. There was also a large change to the API that set things back a bit.
