Scott MacVicar's Blog: Source Code Highlighting within Slides

Scott MacVicar shares a helpful hint for the PHP speakers out there - how to apply syntax highlighting to the code in your slides.

I use Apple's Keynote for doing my presentations and naturally these include some bits of code that need highlighting so that it's easier to read. [...] In the end I used GESHI which is a highlight library written in PHP that supports the syntax highlighting of around 50 different programming and scripting languages.

He's provided his sample implementation to help you get up and running. You'll need to download and install GESHI to get it working though. Here's an example of the output.

Ivo Jansch's Blog: Microsoft and Yahoo, Zend, PHP updates at php|tek

Ivo Jansch has been attending the php|tek 2008 conference this past week and some things have come to light about the rumors between Zend and Microsoft. One of his latest posts sheds some light on how Microsoft responded (as answered by Joe Stagner)

Joe had an interesting presentation, he kept it short and to the point, and had the majority of his time dedicated to Q&A. Naturally, being in a PHP audience, the questions were about Yahoo, Zend, Microsoft's open source policies.

Obviously, questions were asked about two things - the Zend buyout and whether or not they have stopped talks with Yahoo. The answer to the first was a "no, we're not doing that" and the second was a more vague "we're not done talking to them" sort of answer. Another discussion included Microsoft's contributions to the Zend Core - how they're handled and if they're contributed back.

Andi Gutmans (of Zend) has posted an update on the status of the Zend Framework for the month of May:

This [May 15th maintenance release] reinforces our commitment to high quality and we will continue to release periodic mini releases on an as needed basis. [...] Not only is the Zend Framework user base growing rapidly but we are also seeing a sharp rise in adoption of ZF in business-critical commercial applications.

He mentions several major sites moving to use the framework like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IGN Entertainment as well as the update they've made to the contribution process to allow for easier submission and review.

If you weren't able to make it to this year's just passed php|works conference in Atlanta, you missed out on the keynote that Marco Tabini, founder of php|architect gave at the start of the conference. Fortunately, he's posted the video of it on his blog:

What they didn't tell me, however, is that they had arranged for a simple (but, as you will see, very effective) web-based system that allowed members of the audience to submit "captions" to the screen as I was speaking. The results were, of course, hilarious - mostly because they "forgot" to tell me about the idea until a few days after.

Be sure to check out the video of the video for some great one-liners.

With the date for the Zend/PHP Conference & Expo (October 8-11th, San Francisco) conference growing closer all the time, the more updates the better. The Zend Developer Zone has such an update with more details about the keynote talks, sessions, the "after hours" events and more.

Ok, it's been a few days since I've given a ZendCon update so let's burn a few bytes and talk about what is being planned.

The updates concerning the keynotes are the topics the two speakers will be presenting - Cory Doctorow on "copy machines" and Joel Spolsky with his "Great Software" talk. The sessions for the conference are still mostly the same, but the "after hours" activities have exploded.

Things on the list include a ZCE party on Monday, Happy Hour 2.0 on Tuesday and on Wednesday an all-out karaoke party poolside at the hotel.

There's still plenty of time to register for the event and to get more details on the conference and the whens and wheres, check out the main conference site.

Ben Ramsey has posted his own wrapup of the first day of the Zend/PHP Conference & Expo and some of his thoughts on the keynote talk given by Andi, Zeev, et al.

The first day of the Zend/PHP Conference and Expo (the day of tutorials) was great. I sat in on Robert Richards's Advanced XML and Web Services and Marcus's and Sara's Extending PHP tutorials. I multi-tasked as best I could, catching up on some work while finishing my slides and listening to the presentations.

He comments on the talks he's attended (like Robert Richards' XML/Web services talk and the contents of the keynote - including the announcements of the collaborations with Microsoft, IBM, and the new advancements that Zend has made with their products.
