While the tutorial covers creating a PHP Guestbook, it does a wonderful job at going over what steps you need to take in order to create a PHP program, as well as going over some good things to keep in mind when allowing user input.
Also, he found a neat little article all about some essential tools and libraries for using XML with PHP. This article on IBM's site covers how to get XML working with PHP and how to use it successfully (as well as a few other alternatives).
