Zend Weekly Summary, PHP over Java, and Andromeda
Jul 09, 2001 @ 12:35:07

First off, we have two links from Zend.com - the newest PHP weekly summary is out and has some small fixes to things like pow() and some changes to the PHP website (specifically news.php.net). Also from Zend, we have a neat article that talks about why developers are choosing PHP over Java and some of the advantages it has. It's nice to note, though, that PHP can also work with Java to get things done. Too bad it's not the same the other way too.
Java has always been more difficult to learn and changing standards have made it hard to keep up with what you can and can't safely do in an applet.

Last, but definitely not least, I'm going to endorse a little project that I found last night. I was poking around freshmeat and found the Andromeda project when looking for a web interface for my MP3s. I have to say that, by far, this script is the best one that I have seen so far! Not only is it well developed and robust (includes support for logins, themes, and multiple configuration options), but it also looks so professional, you'll forget it's Open Source. (heh) We need more projects like this one in the O.S. world - more that care about how the end product looks and less that "just want to get the job done." So, if you're looking for a web-based frontend to your MP3s, be sure to check out the Andromeda project. (Oh, and of course, it's written in PHP!)
