Zend Announces i5/OS V5R3 Compatibility, PHP Redbook, and RPG Web Cast
Jan 18, 2007 @ 15:28:00

The Zend Developer Zone has an announcement posted about a few new updates from Zend including i5/OS V5R3 Compatibility, a new PHP Redbook, and RPG Web Cast.

The partnership between IBM and Zend is bearing fruit once again. Not satisfied with having PHP run on IBM's i5/OS V5R4, now the two companies have put their heads together and back ported Zend Core for i5/OS to V5R3.

They've also released the redbook for it that shows you how to install, configure, and work with PHP on System i using Zend Core for i5/OS and Zend Platform for i5/OS.

As far as the webcast - you can sign up for that here and find out "Why RPG programmers should care about PHP".

Zend and IBM update PHP for i5/OS
Jan 15, 2007 @ 14:35:00

Daniel Krook has written up an entry talking about the collaboration that Zend and IBM have created in the form of PHP for i5/OS.

OK, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not all that familiar with the nuances of IBM's server brands, despite working for Big Blue. [...] If you *do* happen to have an IBM System i machine, you might be interested in some of the following new developments:

The two items he points to are the latest Zend Core for IBM that's been released and a new Redbook IBM has published to accompany PHP's introduction to IBM's world and to help you get it installed.

The book had three goals; to demonstrate best practices for developing PHP applications with IBM database servers, to provide detailed instructions for administrators to set up all the required software, and to help users migrate from MySQL to DB2.

You can check out the online version of the book here as a PDF file. There's also some additional materials to suppliment it.
