Laracon Online 2019 Announcement
Jan 11, 2019 @ 19:47:57

The Laravel News site has posted an announcement about the latest in their series of Laracon events: Laracon Online 2019.

Laracon Online 2019 is coming to a couch near you on March 6th, 2019! Back and better than ever in this 2019 edition, you will hear from the likes of Laravel creator Taylor Otwell, Tighten Partner and Laracon US speaker Matt Stauffer, Refactoring UI tag-team Adam Wathan and Steve Schoger, Laracon US speakers Freek Van Der Herten and Samantha Geitz, and Laracon 2018 EU speaker Marcel Pociot.

Just like last year, the event is hosted entirely online and the event is super affordable for the early bird price of $12. No hotels, no airfare, just signup and spend the day watching some of the best speakers right from your computer.

And there's good news for those out there wanting to attend the event - they're giving away 355 tickets for free based on the generous donations from several sponsors. Naturally, if you can afford the $12 (that's like 2 cups of fancy coffee!) then don't enter the drawing. They want as many people as possible to enjoy the event. If you're interested in the kind of content presented at these events, check out last year's talks or just head over and get your ticket now.

"PHP Playbook" Giveaway!
Mar 16, 2012 @ 15:19:31

In this new post to his blog Brandon Savage mentions his book, the PHP Playbook (php|architect), and how he's giving away several free copies.

When I started writing my book, I wanted to help PHP developers have a greater understanding of the tools, tips and tricks available when working as part of a team. That goal became The PHP Playbook. I’m excited that the book has been so well received, and I’m excited that I’ve finally received my promotional copies. So, in honor of that, I’m going to give some of them away! I’m even going to sign them!

Just enter in your email address and you'll be put on a mailing list for the book and its future updates. Here's the official description of the book:

Working with a team of developers is a much different environment than solo development. Experienced developers understand the tools and tricks that go into team development enterprises, and they implement them on a daily basis. The PHP Playbook covers these tools and practices, providing insight into the process of developing PHP applications, teaching developers the skills they need to be successful in a team environment.

You want to do WHAT with PHP? GIVEAWAY
Oct 25, 2010 @ 17:08:54

Kevin Schroeder has received a few copies of his "You Want to Do WHAT With PHP?" book from his publisher and is trying to figure out how to give them away for the folks out there that'd like to check it out.

I just got my copies of my book "You want to do WHAT with PHP?" today. During my conversations with MCPress, my publisher, I had asked for 3 copies to do a social media promotion and they agreed. I posted that I would be giving away 3 copies on Twitter and got a whole bunch of "I WANTS". So I asked my publisher for more copies to give away and they agreed to another 6. So that is a total of 9 copies I have available to give away. Now the problem I have is; how do I give them away.

He's asking that whoever wins pays for the shipping (since it's open to world-wide audiences) and will be splitting it up into three categories with three winners each - user groups to help fill their libraries, those on Twitter and Facebook folks.

Giving Away A Free Copy Of CakePHP Application Development
Feb 06, 2009 @ 17:15:51

Those looking to get into developing with CakePHP might want to get in on a book giveaway that Matt Curry is doing over on his blog.

I'm not sure if this is going to be frowned upon, but I'm giving away my review copy of CakePHP Application Development (reviewed here). I figure I don't have much use for it, so maybe someone else will benefit.

To be in the running, all you need to do is make a comment on the post by February 28th, 2009.

Rob Richards' Blog:
We Have A Winner
May 09, 2006 @ 10:48:22

Rob Richards of the CDATA Zone Blog has chosen his winner in the contest for a copy of the book he offered, Pro PHP XML and Web Services - Brian Wurster from Arlington, Virginia.

I received a large number of entries (more than expected), but did read every single one of them. The majority were very well done and ranged from someone threatening to bite their own leg off (nice picture btw) to the other extreme of threatening to beat with me a stick (was very funny if you happen to be familiar with Theo Schlossnagle's post for a junior programmer). Both of these were among the finalists, but the entry finally chosen stood out a bit more than the rest.

What really set this entry apart was the creativity. The entry was submitted as a lone PHP script. Lucky for Brian it ran without errors because there was no way I was going to read all that code :), other than to notice it used the new PHP 5 OO features.

Congrats to Brian and if you'd like to check out more of this book yourself, head over to the official APress page for the book. There's an overview, info about the author, and a sample chapter to get an idea of what it's like.
