Davey Shafik's Blog:
PHP Streams Book (Coming soon!)
April 25, 2008 @ 12:04:09

We can expect big things from Davey Shafik in the coming months - he's been working on a book for php|architect about one of the more powerful bits of functionality in PHP - streams.

For about 6 months now, I've been itching to write a book on the PHP Streams Layer - one of my favorite features of PHP; and also one of the least known considering it's powerful abilities.

He describes his goal simply as this: to create the definitive resource for working with the streams later in PHP. It should be out sometime in the third quarter of 2008, so keep your eye out for it then.

Zend Developer Zone:
Interview w/Francois Zaninotto & Fabien Potencier (Definitive Guide to symfony)
March 30, 2007 @ 16:18:00

The Zend Developer Zone has posted an interview with the two authors of one of APress' latest releases, "The Definitive Guide to symfony" - Francois Zaninotto and Fabien Potencier.

Frameworks are everywhere in the PHP community these days. Different frameworks fill different needs and have different personalities behind them. Recently I had the opportunity to talk with Francois Zaninotto and Fabien Potencier, the driving forces behind the symfony framework. Not too long ago, symfony released their 1.0 milestone version. They have also released their extensive documentation in print from Apress, as well as on the web.

The questions range from the usual "how did you get started with PHP" out to questions about the book, about the framework, and about the documentation surrounding both.

Zend Developer Zone:
The Definitive Guide to symfony - Sample Chapter
March 15, 2007 @ 13:56:00

The Zend Developer Zone has posted a sample chapter of one of the latest APress PHP-related releases, "The Definitive Guide to Symfony".

Continuing in their tradition of having their finger on the pulse of PHP, apress has recently released their latest title, The Definitive Guide to symfony. My friend, Julie Miller sent me over the first chapter to share with you.

The chapter [pdf] is the beginning of the book, the introduction to get you started on the road to using the framework.

Symfony Project:
Online doc interface improved
February 08, 2007 @ 09:10:00

The symfony team have made it even easier to access all of the goodies inside their online version of their "The Definitive Guide to symfony" book (buy it). They've added keyword navigation to the right-hand side of the page to make searching simple.

Many impatient symfony users complained that the online version of the book missed the keywords sidebar. We didn't have time to rewrite it for the launch of the online book, but now it is repaired. Google is currently rebuilding its index of our website, so the search box in this sidebar will soon give relevant results again.

They've also created a less graphic version to make things even faster. Other "translation initiatives" have also started up to get the book put into Chinese, French, and Spanish.
