Belated php|works Recap
September 25, 2006 @ 07:19:38

Chris Shiflett has posted his own recap of the (just passed) php|works conference up in Toronto over on his blog.

I've been traveling non-stop since php|works, so I haven't had a chance to reflect on the conference, what I learned, who I met, and things like that. (Zak has been doing a good job of this lately, and I'd like to follow his lead.) I've probably forgotten more than I remember, but this is my recap.

Included in the things he mentions are:

Christian Wenz's Blog:
php|works/db|works 2006
September 22, 2006 @ 08:06:55

Christian Wenz, back from the php/db|works conference and at a break following the conference, has posted some of his thoughts about this years conference over on his blog.

My schedule was crammed right after php|works 2006, so I could not find an earlier possibility to blog. Anyway, the extended entry contains my short report on php|arch's second conference this year.

He talks about some sightseeing before-hand, Tutorial Day, XML Security demos, Unicode in PHP6, a "slight problem" concerning his laptop, and his role on the Zend PHP5 Certification Panel. Check out the full entry for all of the details and "expect a separate blog entry later" on his experience on the panel.

InternetNews.com:
Is PHP The Cure For The 'Broken' Web?
September 15, 2006 @ 07:55:06

InternetNews.com starts off their latest article the same way Rasmus Lerdorf started off his keynote at php|works this year - "The Web is broken and it's all your fault."

He said the current state of the Internet includes a litany of broken items, but with a little help from PHP there may well be some hope for the Web yet.

The article talks about some of Rasmus' other thoughts on the status of the web, and how, with the right functionality and knowledge spread out through the PHP community, the language can compensate for some of the "stupidity" that web programmers (and users) regularly see.

He also talks a bit about a "rich application delivery system", MySQL versus PostgreSQL, parsing and compiling speed, and opcode caches.

Zend Developer Zone:
php|works - Day Two Wrapup
September 14, 2006 @ 14:21:25

Back with his own look at the php/db|works conference is Cal Evans wrapping up Day Two:

Day Two at php|works started off with a bang. Rasums presented his "Getting Rich with PHP" as the opening keynote. If you've never seen this presentation, the OSCON version is described here with links to a video of it as well as the slides. It's an interesting presentation. I missed the first section of it at OSCON where he slaps around both IE and FLASH pointing out some serious security holes. Again, it's a great presentation and worth the time to listen to.

Cal talks about...well...the talks and about the interviews he started (like with Chris Hartjes, Ilia Alshanetsky, Chris Shiflett, and Sebastian Bergmann).

Zend Developer Zone:
php|works - Day One Wrapup
September 13, 2006 @ 15:32:32

Cal Evans is attending this year's php/db|works conference up in Toronto and has reported back with his summary of the first day of the conference - "Tutorial Day".

Day One at php|works was dedicated to tutorials. Paul Reinheimer did a 6 hour crash course for those who wanted to take the Zend Certification Test here at the conference. I talked with a three attendees at the Crash Course to get their opinion on how it was going. Cairan Walsh, who is not currently Zend Certified found the course interested although he thought maybe it was a bit too basic.

Cal notes that just about everyone that attended the "Crash Course" was pleased with the contents/teacher/etc. He also mentions his visits to the "Advanced XML and Web Services" and "Extending PHP" tutorials.
