Laravel Turns Five
Jun 13, 2016 @ 16:55:54

On the Laravel News site there's a post announcing the official fifth birthday of Laravel, a framework that has definitely made its mark on the community in that short amount of time.

Five years ago today Taylor announced the first release of Laravel to the world. [...] Even though a lot has changed and improved since that first release the code still has that same feel. Like all newborns that first release was very minimal–no controllers, no Eloquent, no templating system. It had enough to get you started but lacked the niceties we now enjoy.

The post also lists some of the things that didn't start out in the framework but have been added since including: Blade, Collections, Eloquent, Queues and Middleware support.

Happy birthday Laravel and a big thank you to Taylor and the entire community.

PHP comes in Fifth in TIOBE Programming Community Index
Jan 08, 2007 @ 16:24:00

As mentioned by the International PHP Magazine site, the latest results for the TIOBE Programming Community Index poll are in for January and it looks like PHP has lost some ground.

PHP, previously in the number four slot, has been superseded by Visual Basic by a decent margin (a difference of 1.18%). This shows as a drop in popularity (as measured by the survey) to be trending back down to where it was around the middle of 2005. It still remains in the top five, though, in a close race with Visual Basic and C++ for those three positions.

The full language list and graph showing the trends back to 2002 can be found on the TIOBE website.

PHP in 5th on Tiobe Software's Community Programming Index (Dec 2006)
Dec 04, 2006 @ 15:03:00

PHP as been bumped down a spot in the popularity ranking provided by Tiobe Software for this month. It was pushed down to fifth place by Visual Basic moving up the ranks. The others in the top five are (in order) Java, C, C++, and Visual Basic.

The ratings are based on the world-wide availability of skilled engineers, courses and third party vendors. The popular search engines Google, MSN, and Yahoo! are used to calculate the ratings. Observe that the TIOBE index is not about the best programming language or the language in which most lines of code have been written.

According to their long term trends graph, PHP has still been gaining popularity overall, with only a bit of a dip lately. Other languages in the top five are also currently seeing similar dips in popularity too. Check out the full report for all of this month's details.

PHP Ranks Fifth in Popularity Contest in August
Aug 04, 2006 @ 11:20:08

As PHP Magazine notes today, PHP has come in fifth (again) on the TIOBE Programming Community index.

The TIOBE Programming Community index gives an indication of the popularity of programming languages. The index is updated once a month. The ratings are based on the world-wide availability of skilled engineers, courses and third party vendors.

The popular search engines Google, MSN, and Yahoo! are used to calculate the ratings. Observe that the TPC index is not about the best programming language or the language in which most lines of code have been written.

Those higher on the list are Java, C, Visual Basic, and C++, though C++ seems to be fading and Visual Basic growing by leaps and bounds. In the long term trends they record, PHP is showing a rising trend, quite a bit up from even just February of this year.
