Scott Mattocks on PHP-GTK
Aug 09, 2006 @ 10:59:29

On his blog today, Kaj Kandler has posted some thoughts about the Boston PHP User Group meeting he attended (for August) and the talk that Scott Mattocks gave concerning PHP-GTK.

Scott Mattocks introduced the basic concepts of PHP-GTK 2. He gave a well researched sample application using PHP and the Gimp Toolkit (GTK). The application queried an online database of events. His presentation went from from an empty window to the mostly functioning application with query form and result page.

Kaj also mentions the time following where talk of widgets and long running tasks abounded. They also asked the question several looking into using PHP-GTK ask - why use it over just a standard web interface? Check out the post for their answer...

Mini-Review: Pro PHP-GTK
Aug 06, 2006 @ 10:49:16

Davey Shafik has posted his own mini-review of the popular APress book from Scott Mattocks, Pro PHP-GTK.

Several weeks ago I recieved a copy of Pro PHP GTK by Scott Mattocks in the mail. The first surprise, upon opening the package, is that the book is a hardback - a first for me (at least, for a tech book). I assume this is the norm for all APress books these days, which is very cool as the cover price didn't seem to be inflated because of it.

He takes you through a quick tour of the book, mentioning the introductory chapters, a 'ride' through the world of PHP-GTK2 (including widgets), and an example application.

Davey notes that he wouldn't call it a 'fast reader', but the book is still a great resource and he would highly recommend it. It reminded him of how flexible PHP really is, even at creating client-side graphical interfaces.

PHP-GTK News #19
Jun 28, 2006 @ 13:42:49

The week of June 21st through the 28th was a rather quite week for PHP-GTK. There was actually a lot of chatter on the development mailing list but most of it didn't lead to any news items.

Anyway, here are the headlines for this week:

  • More patches to functionality in GdkPixmap
  • A new A/R/T article is available - "Managing Layout in PHP-GTK 2″
  • PHP-GTK 1.x installer for Mac OSX available
  • PHP-GTK 2 presentation online from the New York PHP Conference
  • Additions to GxLib

Read on for the details...

Book Review - Pro PHP-GTK
Jun 27, 2006 @ 13:37:47

Codewalkers.com has posted a new book review today of the APress book (by Scott Mattocks) - Pro PHP-GTK.

PHP-GTK is a library allowing PHP developers to create graphical GTK applications. Pro PHP-GTK by Scott Mattocks aims to teach this tool to people of all skill levels from those who can read PHP fairly well to professionals. This might make it kind of disturbing for the more advanced coder, because the book teaches even the most basic things like "What is a GUI application?" and "What are they good for?"

Although the book is meant for beginning coders, too, it doesn't mean it should contain stuff that is aimed at people who know nothing about computers. Luckily, after a few chapters this problem seems to vanish.

He notes that once the basics are out of the way, the book really gets to the heart of the matter with a case study of a product information management system example. Lots of code is provided, and there's some talk about getting the needed packages installed to work with the examples in the book. He rates it well, with only a few issues (too simple to start?) to detract from it.
