Laraconf Brazil 2016
Oct 17, 2016 @ 16:53:12

On the Laravel News site there's a post that wraps up Laraconf Brazil 2016 with a quick summary for those that weren't able to attend.

The Laravel community in South America put together their first unofficial one day Laravel conference in Brazil on October 8th.

“What I most enjoyed was the ability to network with every attendee,” said Matheus Marabesi one of the organizers, “people around Brazil came to our conference, and it was amazing”.

The event featured ten talks from scaling applications to TDD, to career development. It was a nice mixture of things developers care about. They also, with the help of the sponsors, were able to record every talk and have it available in a YouTube playlist.

As the conference was in Brazil, the sessions aren't in English unfortunately. They included sessions covering: caching strategies, test-driven development, multi-tenant architecture and Elasticsearch. The post also includes several photos from the event and answers to a few other questions from organizer Matheus Marabesi.

Rafael Dohms:
We are all PHP Evangelists
Jan 07, 2013 @ 17:53:04

Rafael Dohms has a recent post to his site, a republishing of an article of his from a previous php|architect magazine suggesting that we, as users of PHP, are all evangelists for the language and its community.

Every PHP Developer is at core a PHP evangelist, someone who is ready to raise the PHP flag and defend it. This does not mean your answer to everything is PHP, as a true evangelist you know the strengths and shortcomings of your own language, and when to just say “don’t use it”, but you are also ready to defend it and prove its worthiness when its misjudged or just plainly misunderstood.

He includes an example from the Brazilian PHP community, an incident where a local TV newscast got their facts wrong and noted that "most things ending in .php were a virus" and should be avoided. The PHP community, of course, got up in arms about it and, thankfully, the news station realized their mistake and made a retraction about their comments.

So why the tale? Well this is what being a PHP Developer is to me, its more then just being a member, its like a family. And like any family you need to be there for the bad and the good, and watch out for each other. That means you must really embrace the language, learn about it.

There is a greater disparity with PHP use in Emerging Markets. The largest number of developers using the language can be found in Eastern Europe (39%). India and Brazil have similar usage at a little over 31%. In contrast, only 21% of Chinese developers are utilizing PHP. In North America, 35% of developers are using PHP.
