A Chat About Cloud Computing & PHP Development In The Cloud
Jul 29, 2013 @ 14:05:13

On 7PHP.com today there's a new interview, another with Vito Chin, this time talking about cloud computing and doing PHP development specifically for that environment.

Whenever we talk about web development nowadays, there has to be an awareness or at least an interest towards cloud computing. We, as PHP Developers, should be aware of what development in the cloud has to offer and how we can leverage it to stay in the game. To this end, I bring forward a small interview with the Pro Cloud Computing guy, I named Vito Chin! Let’s hear and learn form his pro experience and advice...

After some brief introductions, they start in talking about Vito's book (co-author) "PHP Development in the Cloud" and some of the basics of SaaS (cloud-based services) ownership. He mentions the high scalability needed and some architecture considerations you'l need to keep in mind during development. He also points out a few "pain points" to watch out for and includes some recommendations of services/libraries to use.

PHP Interview With Vito Chin Lead Maintainer Of Gmagick Extension For PHP
Jun 10, 2013 @ 18:50:28

On 7PHP.com there's a new community interview posted - this time with Vito Chin, the maintainer of the Gmagick extension for PHP.

In this edition I talked with Vito Chin who is a multi-talented, cool geek; @vitoc has a first class honors degree in Software Engineering, is a co-founder of lentor.io, is the lead maintainer of the Gmagick extension for PHP and is the co-author of the PHP book “PHP Development in the Cloud by Ivo Jansch and Vito Chin” – (btw Rafael Dohms, our Brazilian PHP Ronaldo made a review of that book here). I invite you to learn from Vito’s PHP and programming experience..

In the interview they talk about things like Vito's experience, how he got started with PHP and his advice to those wanting to become better developers. There's also a section talking in more detail about performance and how important it is to a project.

PHP Development in the Cloud by Ivo Jansch and Vito Chin
Aug 09, 2011 @ 18:52:24

Rafael Dohms has posted a review of a book from Ivo Jansch and Vito Chin - "PHP Development in the Cloud", a guide to some considerations about running PHP applications on cloud-based platforms.

Cloud computing is finally reaching a point of maturity and leaving its early "hype" years behind. Ivo and Vito do a very good job of bringing the topic into a PHP developer’s world in a very concise and objective manner, without leaving important platforms and concepts behind.

He briefly mentions the book's contents, both the technical and infrastructure issues it addresses, and gives a general opinion on the book and recommends it:

The book was a very pleasant read, not thick and not too thin. It helped me greatly as I prepared to give a presentation on Cloud Computing, allowing me to see different points of view as well as compare other technologies i had not had time or chance to try.

Book Review: PHP Development in the Cloud
May 26, 2011 @ 13:57:45

Michelangelo van Dam has posted a book review of one of the latest offerings from the php|architect presses, Ivo Jansch and Vito Chin's "PHP Development in the Cloud".

A couple of weeks ago, my dear friend Cal Evans asked me to review the book "PHP Development in the Cloud" written by "Ivo Jansch" and "Vito Chin". I accepted as I was very interesting in exploring more of the cloudy world I just found myself in the middle of. Another reason was that both authors were fellow co-workers at Ibuildings back in the day. I promised this would be an objective review seen through the eyes of a developer just started exploring the mystifying world of cloud solutions.

He briefly covers the focus of the book and how it makes the distinctions between platform types (PaaS, Sass, etc) to help clear a few things up. He liked that the book was written and organized well, but noted that some of the examples provided were hard to get working on the different platforms. He wished there was some sort of disclaimer that came with it that there'd be a learning curve on the examples that might require some additional work outside of the example to get started.

Book: PHP Development in the Cloud
Apr 27, 2011 @ 17:29:26

Vito Chin has posted a quick mention of the book that he and Ivo Jansch wrote together about cloud computing and how PHP fits into the picture - PHP Development in the Cloud.

I had a conversation with Ivo at the Claddagh Ring of Hendon and we'd decided to write this book together. We wanted to clarify where cloud computing will intersect with the internet & the WWW; and parts of it that makes having a different term to describe the cloud necessary. We do so from a PHP perspective because it is the language for the web that we like the most.

Here's the book's summary:

Most developers gloss over when they hear "the cloud" as the term has been appropriated by marketing types and has very little true meaning anymore. In this book, Vito and Ivo strip bare the buzzwords and help PHP developers figure out what the cloud is actually about and how they can take advantage of what cloud computing has to offer. After reading this book, you will not only have a clear picture of what cloud computing is, but you’ll also be able to utilize the various cloud services that are out there.
