Laracon Chicago Recap
Aug 02, 2018 @ 18:19:50

For those that weren't able to make it to the Laracon US 2018 (Chicago) conference, the Laravel News site has posted a recap of the event and their experiences.

Laracon US 2018 is now in the books and it was a fantastic event and a lot of fun was had in Chicago. As someone who has never visited Chicago before I was very impressed with the city. The weather was magnificent and the parts I walked around seemed safe and pretty clean for a large city.

[...] Every Laracon strives to bring a great experience from the venue to the location, the swag, and this year didn’t disappoint.

The post then goes on to talk about some of the swag the conference handed out, the venue where it was held and a link to the keynote from Laravel creator Taylor Otwell (and a matching live blog). The post also includes several pictures the author (Eric Barnes) took during the conference.

Symfony Blog:
We're sorry to announce the cancellation of the SymfonyLive Chicago 2016
Aug 11, 2016 @ 15:49:08

On the Symfony Blog there's a sad announcement that they are having to cancel SymfonyLive Chicago for their 2016 event.

We are very sorry to inform you that we are canceling the SymfonyLive Chicago conference this October 13th and 14th.

After much pained reflection, we realize that we have no choice. Our venue requires a minimum number of attendees, a number from which we are too far, and we know that over the next two months, we cannot possibly meet the requirement.

We have never held a SymfonyLive conference in Chicago before and were hoping to extend the Symfony community’s reach to the mid-west. Unfortunately, it just won’t be possible this year. However, we are confident that with another year of work, we will be able to bring the SymfonyLive back to the United States and hope that you will still be interested in our common goals to keep improving the framework for the benefit of everyone!

They do note, however, that both SymfonyLive London and SymfonyLive Berlin are still on and registration is open for both.

php|tek's Unconference Track & Chair - Michelangelo van Dam
Feb 13, 2013 @ 15:13:27

The php|tek conference has officially announced the Unconference track that'll be happening at this year's event and their excitement about the chair for the track - Michaelangelo van Dam.

We are excited to announce more details about the Uncon at tek13! This year we are honored to have Michelangelo van Dam (@DragonBe) serve as our Uncon chair. Michelangelo has done this for numerous other conferences in the past and we are deeply thankful to him for agreeing to help organize our Uncon as well.

This year's unconference will be an entire track happening all days of the conference instead of just later in the day on some days. If you're planning on attending the event and either didn't get a talk accepted or just want to talk about something you love, you should consider signing up when you arrive. Sessions for the next day will be selected at the end of each day from the ones added to the schedule.

Zend Developer Zone:
php|tek `11 - Hacking in the (very) Windy City
Jun 01, 2011 @ 16:01:00

On the Zend Developer Zone there's a new post wrapping up this year's php|tek conference that's just finished in Chicago.

Last week PHP developers from around the world converged on Chicago, IL - US, for the 7th annual php|tek conference. Over the course of three and a half days there was a lot of learning, sharing, networking, and all the other usual stuff that goes on at these types of events. As usual, the conversations were great, the food was edible and the wifi sucked. Along the way though, new friendships were forged and new ideas were hatched.

Cal talks about some of what makes conferences great and gives examples like Elizabeth Naramore's keynote, sessions on topics like Node.js and XDebug and developers passionate about the projects they represent. He mentions the evening activities (community building) including the Unconference and Hack-a-thons as well as a mixer/gaming night.

No confernece is perfect and tek '11 is no exception to that rule. However, attendees were exposed to new ideas, inspired by thought provoking keynotes and given the space and tools to create. That is the real value of a conference to me, planting the seeds.

DrupalCon '11 Thoughts (Parts 1 & 2)
Mar 11, 2011 @ 18:54:22

On the Zend Developer Zone Cal Evans has shared some of his thoughts and impressions as he attended this year's DrupalCon in Chicago, Illinois. He's shared them in two parts - general thoughts and some more specific ones on the details of the event.

This week I am in downtown Chicago making new friends and attending sessions and parties at DrupalCon '11. I will have to say, I've been to a lot of conferences in the past 6 years but it is rare that I meet a community that is as enthusiastic and friendly as the Drupal community.

He talks about some of the presentation including the keynote by Dries Buytaert that mentioned the contribution levels to Drupal, Drupal 8 and an encouragement to the Drupal community that the future of the software was secure. In the second post he looks at a few details of the conference - the food situation (management, not quality), the size of the rooms vs the number of attendees, the event's wifi and communication situations.

CakeFest 2010:
Thats a wrap
Sep 07, 2010 @ 13:46:27

For those that didn't get to attend this year's CakeFest 2010, The Bakery has put together this summary of some of the things that happened and the presentations that were given.

CakeFest 2010 has come to a close. After 4 days of jam-packed talks, workshops, lightning talks and social outings, we're sad to see it finish. I'd like to thank the community for their ongoing and ever increasing support. Both for the community and for the CakeFest conference itself. Without the passionate community around CakePHP, we couldn't achieve events like CakeFest 2010.

They mention some of the sponsors that made the event possible - like Microsoft, GitHub and ActiveState - as well as some photos from the event and links to twelve of the presentations that were given over the four day event.
