July 24, 2012 @ 11:56:28

The Voices of the ElePHPant podcast has released their latest episode - an interview with Michelangelo van Dam, an organizer of PHPBenelux and well-known speaker.

Cal's three questions have to do with his user group and conference experience:

  • You're a leader of the PHPBenelux User Group that moves around a lot, tell us some about how that works
  • Tell us some about he PHPBelenux conference and some of the things you've learned about running an event like that
  • Why should someone be part of the PHP community?

You can listen to this latest episode either through the in-page player, by downloading the mp3 or by subscribing to their feed.

7php.com:
Interview With Michelangelo van Dam - President Of PHPBenelux PHP Use
January 23, 2012 @ 12:55:02

On 7php.com today there's a new community interview - this time it's with Michelangelo van Dam, the President of the PHPBenelux user group and well known PHP speaker/community advocate.

In this edition, I talked with Michelangelo van Dam a senior PHP/Zend Framework consultant. This man really needs no introduction; he is so much of an invaluable asset to the PHP community. As per wefollow.com, he is ranked as the 4th (out of 113) most influential person on Twitter for #zendframework and as the 25th (out of 2,543) most influential person for #php

Questions in the interview cover everything from a bit of history about Michelangelo out to how supportive the PHP community is:

Give and expect nothing in return. People appreciate it more when you give something from the heart instead of giving something as a favor for a future return.

Other questions touch on his "community animal" nickname, his community/life balance and his tracking of the work Microsoft is doing to help the PHP language.

PHPBenelux BugHuntDay 2010 (Zend Framework & Joind.in)
November 10, 2010 @ 13:04:53

The PHPBenelux group has officially announced this month's BugHuntDay they'll be having near the end of November on Saturday the 27th in the offices of WEBclusive.

As has become tradition after 2008 (Zend Framework) and 2009 (symfony), we again organize a PHPBenelux BugHuntDay in November this year. We even decided to make the BugHuntDay a bit bigger. On Saturday November 27th, we will be focusing not on one but on two projects! We will focus on Zend Framework for the framework-heads, and on the Joind.in codebase for the community-heads.

Developers wishing to work on the code base for either project are welcome, whether you're familiar with the frameworks involved or not (Joind.in uses CodeIgniter). If you're planning on attending, sign up and mark yourself as attending on this Joind.in event.

Stefan Koopmanschap's Blog:
The DPC Uncon
June 09, 2010 @ 10:58:58

In a new post to his blog Stefan Koopmanschap talks about the unconfernece happening at this year's Dutch PHP Conference and how the PHPBenelux user group will be the ones hosting it in parallel with the main confernece tracks.

The DPC Uncon is very similar to the uncons found at other PHP conferences. There is little new about this uncon. However, it is a new addition to a conference with such a list of advanced topics that there is no doubt the uncon will also host a variety of interesting topics for people visiting the Dutch PHP Conference as well. We at PHPBenelux are honored to be the hosts of the first DPC Uncon. What this means is that we'll manage the registrations of speakers into the schedule, and we will also try to make sure that all speakers are at the uncon room in time for their chosen timeslot.

The unconfernece will open each morning with all spots empty for that day (no signing up for spots on future days) to be filled with pretty much anyone wanting to present on any topic they're passionate about. If you've never experienced an unconfernece and are wondering some of what to expect, Stefan also has linked to an article he's written on what it can be like.

Lorna Mitchell's Blog:
DPC10 Has an Uncon
June 02, 2010 @ 07:48:21

Great news for those planning in attending this year's Dutch PHP Conference from Lorna Mitchell (this year's host) - there will be an unconference run by the PHPBenelux group.

I'm so excited about the unconference, although I don't know how our wider attendees will take to it as it hasn't been done before locally. In order to include as many people as possible (and to keep the admin overhead to a minimum) we'll schedule during the conference, on a first-come, first-served basis. This avoids the in-crowd getting voted into all the slots in advance; the uncon is for everyone to take part, not just for the people who are already well known!

The unconfernece will also give spaces for those ad-hoc conference sessions if there's a demand for more information about a topic than a speaker (or other attendee) could previously provide. So, if you're planning on attending the conference and weren't accepted to the official list, bring those ideas with you and see if you can get them into the unconference!

PHPBenelux Organizes TestFest 2010 (June 5th)
May 10, 2010 @ 14:04:48

The PHPBenelux group has officially announced the TestFest event they'll be holding for this year on June 5th (2010).

It has become a tradition for PHPBenelux to organize our instance of PHP TestFest, and this year will be no different! All PHP developers are invited to join us again this year for PHP TestFest 2010, which will take place in Maastricht on Saturday June 5th. Participating in the TestFest is completely free and open for everyone, members and non-members.

The only requirement is that participants must bring their own equipment to work on and that you have at least a little experience with writing PHP (you'll need it for the tests). This year's event will take place at Hoogbrugstraat 1 in Maastricht and will start around 10am and go until 4pm to try to get as many tests done as possible. Don't worry if you don't know how to write the tests - there'll be plenty of people to show you how!

If you'd like to attend the event, RSVP today so they can know how many to expect.
